Hi everyone, and welcome to my new blog.
Some readers may already know me, but if you’re new, my name is Mike Kasaboski and in my former role here at York University I was the coordinator of York’s RED Zone program. I’ve also been the Orientation & Student Experience Assistant, a role that saw me planning and organizing Parents Orientation, Orient the Leaders and Welcome Week; just a few of the many great events and awesome units that all call the Office of Student Community & Leadership Development (SCLD) home. I’ve recently taken over a brand new position at SCLD as the Student Engagement & Media Coordinator. As part of this change I’ve handed over RED Zone coordination to Shaila Khan. She and her team are already doing amazing things in the ‘Zone, creating a welcoming space for transitioning new students and adding all sorts of new innovation.
Innovation and ideas are things that really motivate me, along with change and creativity. These interests are what lead me down the road to exploring social media and online community building with the RED Zone. Over the years I was able to gain some important experience and forge a popular and well known identity for the RED Zone. I’m now excited to say that I will be taking all those exciting lessons I learned to my new role, where I’ll be working to forge a strong voice and identity for Student Community & Leadership Development. This means I’ll also get to coordinate and share the communications efforts of the other incredible programs and units that make up Student Community & Leadership Development. Just to give you a taste, and in case you’re a new reader or new to York, here’s a list of all that’s awesome at SCLD:
- Residence Life
- Student Clubs & Organizations / YU Connect
- RED Zone
- Health Education
- Student Leadership
- Family & Parent Program
- Elections York
I know, right? Totally impressive.
To help me in creating all this amazing print and digital media that is to come, I’ve put together a sharp team who bring a barrage of talent, ideas and enthusiasm to the table. I brought a few of them over with me from the RED Zone and I’ve added a couple new characters to keep things fresh – they are:
- Morgan – Team Lead and Organization
- Chris – Layout and Languages
- Nikki – Photography and Enthusiasm
- Jeff – Design and Cool
- Vanessa – Video and Laughs
Of course, I’ve only touched on a couple of each team member’s skills and traits, but I chose them all for the breadth of experience they each bring. Currently, you can find all of them on Twitter and at their personal blogs and over time they’ll all get to flex their creative muscle for you. We’re working hard behind the scenes to get our new website and team blog up and running and we’ll link you to it as soon as it’s ready. You’ll also want to watch for our new Instagram and YouTube channels coming soon too. There’s lots of excitement ahead and we can’t wait to share and interact with you.
Some of my personal goals for this new adventure include:
- project management – because we’re going to be busy
- internal communications – because it’s just as important as your public communications
- digital skill development – because we can never stop learning
- analytics and data collection – because it’s not glamorous, but it proves our worth
